Genetrix is operated through the main icon window, which provides access to all functions of the system. This is the first screen you see when you open Genetrix, and it is your base of operation for performing analyses.

The Input/Output portion of the main icon window contains the Import icon, as well as icons for interfacing with other formats and managing projects.
A Genetrix project is a complete collection of data related to an overall analysis. It is stored as a single file. The Project section provides icons for accessing, saving and viewing projects. If more than one project is open, open projects are listed and the currently active project is highlighted.

Columns in the center of the main icon window display two lists of Subsets, one for samples or genes and the other for features. You use the tabs at the tops of these columns to switch between samples and genes or between different types of features.
The subset list shows each named subset and the number of members in the subset. You use these columns to select the Active Subset for samples or features. When a subset is selected, any explanatory notes entered when it was created appear at the bottom of the column.
The icons displayed below the subset list are applicable to the list/tab currently displayed, and the icons will change as you select different tabs. Many functions are available for both feature data and sample data. The feature-related icons are green and the sample-related icons are yellow. This color coding also applies in all other windows in Genetrix.
